Do you need council approval in Brisbane?
Brisbane City Council protects many trees on private land. Check before any work starts, because penalties fall on the owner.
What's protected
Council trees (street and park trees), waterway and wetland vegetation, significant urban vegetation (mature or prominent trees on private land) and significant native vegetation. Significant Landscape Trees have the tightest rules.
Common exemptions
A tree with its whole trunk within 3 m of an occupied house (6 m on blocks over 4,000 m²), and pruning no more than 20% of live foliage in 12 months to AS 4373. Neither applies to Significant Landscape Trees.
Immediate danger
A tree that's an immediate and significant threat, like a split trunk or a lean with lifting soil, can be dealt with first. Send council photos, and an arborist report if asked, within 10 business days.
Permits are free
Short-term permits cover one-off pruning or removal. Long-term permits can run up to 10 years with a vegetation management plan. Call 07 3403 8888 or request a property report first.
Official source: Brisbane City Council. More detail in our Brisbane tree removal rules guide.
Trees near powerlines
Energex looks after the lines up to the first point of contact on your property, and normally trims trees growing into street powerline clearance for free. Lines past your first property pole are yours to keep clear. Never trim near powerlines yourself.
Neighbour's tree over the fence
You can cut overhanging branches and roots back to your boundary, unless a protection order covers the tree. If branches overhang more than 50 cm and sit under 2.5 m, a Form 3 notice gives your neighbour at least 30 days to deal with them. For higher branches, you can cut back to the boundary yourself or apply to QCAT.
Storm damage
A tree down on the house or across the driveway? Get people clear first, then call for help. 1 of the businesses on this list say they do 24/7 emergency work.
When you need an arborist, not just a tree crew
AQF Level 3 is the trade qualification for climbing, pruning and removal work. AQF Level 5 is the diploma held by consulting arborists, who assess a tree's health and risk and write the reports councils and tribunals rely on.
You'll usually want a consulting arborist when you apply to council to prune or remove a protected tree, when you're building near trees, or when a neighbour dispute heads to QCAT, which can order an arborist to inspect a tree and report on it.
In Brisbane, council may ask for an arborist report with a permit application to work on protected vegetation. For Significant Landscape Trees, council says arborist advice may be needed to support an application.
How we chose these arborists
We built the list from public information, then checked each business by hand.
- 1
Build a long list
We started with arborists in Brisbane found through Google Maps, the Queensland Arboricultural Association and local searches across Brisbane, northside and southside.
- 2
Weed out the fronts
Tree lopping is full of keyword websites that forward calls to whoever pays. We checked each business's ABN, owner and base, and dropped any we couldn't confirm.
- 3
Check reputation
Shortlisted businesses needed a strong, consistent record of Google reviews over years. A few glowing reviews wasn't enough.
- 4
Read their own details
Qualifications, insurance, services and service area come from each business's own website. If a detail was unclear, we left it out.
- 5
Rank the list
Ranked on qualifications, reputation, experience and whether the business writes arborist reports.
What doesn't affect ranking
- Payment. No business pays to be listed or to rank higher.
- Size or advertising spend.
- Spotted something out of date? Tell us and we'll recheck it.
Arborists in Brisbane: questions people ask
Do I need council approval to remove a tree in Brisbane?
If the tree is protected vegetation and no exemption applies, yes. Under Brisbane City Council's Natural Assets Local Law 2003, mature or prominent trees on private land are often protected as significant urban vegetation. Permit applications are free. A common exemption covers a tree whose whole trunk is within 3 m of an occupied house on a block up to 4,000 m², but not Significant Landscape Trees. You can request a property map and report from council to see what's protected. Read our Brisbane tree rules guide.
What's the difference between a Level 3 and a Level 5 arborist?
AQF Level 3 is the practical trade qualification for climbing, pruning and removing trees. AQF Level 5 is a diploma held by consulting arborists, who assess tree health and risk and write formal reports. Many tree services have both on staff.
How much does an arborist report cost?
As a rough guide from published SEQ price guides, a simple report starts from about $300. Reports with a full tree risk assessment, several trees or a development application cost more. Ask what's included before you book.
Who should write a report for council?
Check what your council wants before you book. Many councils ask for a report from a consulting arborist, often one with an AQF Level 5 qualification, and a report from someone the council won't accept means paying twice.
